The West softball team took a loss 2-8 against Unity Christian, Tuesday night, at home. The game kicked off with a slow start, the first inning going 0-0. Sr. Madison Wycoff jumped into action with a home run scoring Soph. Jenna Hendricks, ending the second inning with two runs. Unity kept up their momentum in the sixth with three runs and West wasn't able to catch up, ending the game in the seventh 2-8.
Sr. Madison Wycoff said, We started hot in the second with a really good team effort, then we just fell off a little bit. Both Sadie and I were really strong in the circle for pitching. Our defense fell off but we were really strong on hitting and offense.”
Coach Kayla Smart remarked, “We had a good offensive start and got a little sleepy in the middle of the game. We gave them some runs they didn't necessarily earn. But we played hard, did well and stayed ahead as best as we could. Great conference games I'm proud of them for sticking through playing a top ranked team.”

The Zeeland West softball team beat Rockford, on the road, 10-5 on Thursday night. The game started off strong for Rockford with four runs in just the first inning, but the Dux returned with one run in the first, and two in the second. The next two innings were slow with no runs. The Dux came back and scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth with Rockford gaining one run in the fifth. After a tight first 6 innings West went in strong for the seventh and got 4 runs finishing out the game 10-5.
Sr. Maddi Veersma said, I thought that the game went really well. We were behind in the first half then we stepped on the gas pedal and came out with the win. I think our team really came together at the end, stringing hits together. Our defense was really solid, probably the best defensive game for us so far.” Veersma had one hit and one run in Thursday's game.
Coach Kayla Smart added, “This game we turned our bats on even in the first inning. Plucked away every inning, put our pieces together, put some bunts down. We had some big hard hits and a lot of teamwork. A lot of fun effort.”
