In left to right order (in the photo):Derek Kingshott - Derek graduated from Zeeland West in 2008 as an accomplished student-athlete participating in basketball, football and track and field. In basketball, Derek was a two time all conference player in the 2007 and 2008 season and was named to the BCAM All-State Team following the 2007-08 season. Similar to basketball, Derek was a two time all conference football player, two time member of the Holland Sentinel All-Area team, member of the Grand Rapids Press Dream Team in 2006 and a member of the Zeeland West State Championship football team in 2006. On the track, Derek was all conference in 2008 and was a member of the Track and Field State Championship Relay teams in both the 1600 and 3200. West Varsity Golf takes 6th out of 22 teams at the Thornapple Kellogg Invitational
Boys Varsity West GolfThe West varsity golf team placed 6th at the Thornapple Kellogg Invitational held at Yankee Springs Golf Course today. Sophomore Mike Girman led the Dux with a solid 75, which was T-4 out of 132 players. Logan Bomers added a 79 while Mikey Fuller and Graham VanDort had a pair of 83's. The team travels to Diamond Springs Golf Course tomorrow to compete in the Hamilton Invitational.

Girls Lacrosse Loses at Byron Center
Girls Varsity Lacrosse - Co-opThe Zeeland Girls Lacrosse Team lost to Byron Center 4-18 on the road Wednesday evening. The game in Byron Center opened up with an early Zeeland goal by Sr. Ava Knott, followed by eight Byron Center goals to close out the 1st quarter. Coach Brooke VanderStelt stated, “It was a little bit of a difficult game for us. We tried our best to hold it together as a team, and we’re going to take this, learn from it, and do better the next game.” As the bitterly cold night went on, Zeeland fell further behind. Zeeland continued to fight back with three goals distributed among three players: Sr. Audrey Durham, So. Audrina Knoper, and Sr. Saige Canfield. Durham remarked, “It was a pretty difficult game for us, but we kind of just stuck with it. They pushed us to our limit, but we gave it everything we got and fought to the end.”

The Lady Dux Secure Win over the Rams After Close First 6 Innings
Girls Varsity West SoftballThe Zeeland West softball team beat Rockford, on the road, 10-5 on Thursday night. The game started off strong for Rockford with four runs in just the first inning, but the Dux returned with one run in the first, and two in the second. The next two innings were slow with no runs. The Dux came back and scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth with Rockford gaining one run in the fifth. After a tight first 6 innings West went in strong for the seventh and got 4 runs finishing out the game 10-5. Sr. Maddi Veersma said, I thought that the game went really well. We were behind in the first half then we stepped on the gas pedal and came out with the win. I think our team really came together at the end, stringing hits together. Our defense was really solid, probably the best defensive game for us so far.” Veersma had one hit and one run in Thursday's game. Boys Track and Field Beats Hamilton and Holland
Boys and Girls Varsity West TrackThe Zeeland West Boys Varsity Track team started their season off with a double dual win against Hamilton 84-53, and Holland 123-14 on Tuesday evening at Zeeland Stadium. The DUX placed first in all the sprinter events and swept first and second place in the 1600. They also took all first, second and third place finishes in long jump. Winning the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.85 and the 300m hurdles with a time of 39.77 was Sr. Keaton Hendricks. Alongside Hendricks, Jr. Keagan Smith placed first in both the 1600 with a time of 4:43.72 and the 800 with a time of 2:05.39. Varsity Boys Head Coach Phil Hoover commented, “The effort level within our boys team was good coming into our first meet of the season. Boys and Girls Varsity West TrackZeeland West beat Hamilton and Holland at home Tuesday night in cool and windy conditions. The Dux beat Hamilton 86-50 and Holland 87.5-49.5. With a balanced attack in both field events and running the Dux were able to beat both opponents rather one-sidedly. Stand out performers for the Dux included Sr. Jordin Robelin, who scored points in the 100m and long jump. Soph. Sam Koppenol who scored points in the 400m, 4x800 and high jump. Coach Kenemer stated “Today was a good learning opportunity. The athletes got to see what events they like to run and us coaches can see where they fit best. Overall I think we did great for the first meet and came out with a win for both girls and boys” Soph. Sam Koppenol said “My 4x800 did not go as planned but it was fun and a good learning experience. I also think my jump went well.”

Girls Varsity West SoccerThe Dux varsity soccer team came up short in their season opener against the Grandville Tuesday night, falling to the Bulldogs 0-1. The lone goal of the match was scored midway through the first half. Despite growing into the match and generating some really solid scoring opportunities towards the end of the first half and throughout the second half, the Dux were unable to find the back of the net. "We struggled initially in the first half getting out of our own end, battling the wind and their pace through the middle. We definitely had some first game jitters. However, I felt we grew into the match and were much more confident and comfortable the final 10-15 minutes leading into the break. We did a much better job of moving the ball and finding pockets of space in possession in the second half, generating 3-4 really good chances on net.
