In left to right order (in the photo):Derek Kingshott - Derek graduated from Zeeland West in 2008 as an accomplished student-athlete participating in basketball, football and track and field. In basketball, Derek was a two time all conference player in the 2007 and 2008 season and was named to the BCAM All-State Team following the 2007-08 season. Similar to basketball, Derek was a two time all conference football player, two time member of the Holland Sentinel All-Area team, member of the Grand Rapids Press Dream Team in 2006 and a member of the Zeeland West State Championship football team in 2006. On the track, Derek was all conference in 2008 and was a member of the Track and Field State Championship Relay teams in both the 1600 and 3200. Derek also excelled in the classroom graduating #4 in this class. Following graduation from Zeeland West, Derek went on to a career as a student-athlete at Hillsdale for 1 year playing foo

Boys Varsity West Wrestling vs. Multiple Opponents
Boys Varsity West WrestlingThe Dux competed in five duals at the Tim Horn Invitational, battling through a deep field and finishing the day in 7th place. Team Results Round 1: Holland West Ottawa defeated Zeeland West 47–35 Round 2: Otsego defeated Zeeland West 48–28 Round 3: Forest Hills Northern defeated Zeeland West 52–27 Consolation: Holland defeated Zeeland West 43–33 7th Place Match: Zeeland West defeated Kalamazoo Central 51–21 Individual Records: Going 5-0 were Aiden Chavez and Austin Ulberg. Going 4-1 were Tyson Touch and Damian Calderon. Also going 3-2 were Kye Chayer, Nolan Overway, and Lachlan Thoreson. Today was a competitive day that provided valuable mat time and some strong tests against quality opponents. The Dux showed up today as they continue stacking things together throughout the season.

Boys Varsity West Basketball vs. Hopkins High School
Boys Varsity West BasketballOn Saturday afternoon the Dux headed to Hopkins to take on the Vikings. The game was back and forth through the first half with the Dux stretching the lead to eight a couple of times, but the Vikings closed the half and trimmed it to four, 28-24. Gabe Bouwens led the Dux with 10 points in the first half. The Dux came out in the second half and rode the hot shooting of Mike Girman, who knocked down three 3-pointers in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 11. The Dux got off to a good start in the fourth quarter and increased the lead to as many as 17, with the final being 61-46. Logan Nash came up big for the Dux, tallying over 5 steals and making many multi-effort plays that set the tone for the team all day. Mikey Girman finished with 14 points and tallied 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Drew Albrecht put in 10 points, going 4-6 from the field, and Matthew Wolf added 8 points. Boys Varsity West WrestlingWe had a lot going on today across all three programs. The boys' varsity team traveled to Hudsonville to face a strong field featuring several highly ranked teams and individual wrestlers from around the state. The Dux battled through five duals, falling to Hudsonville 66–18, Harper Creek 75–0, Hartland “B” 75–5, Cedar Springs 61–18, and Comstock Park 53–24. While the results didn’t fall our way, the day provided valuable experience against high-level competition and highlighted some positives to build on, as well as areas for continued improvement as the season progresses.The JV team competed at East Kentwood, showing resilience throughout the day. Aiden Talsma and Ben Daniels both finished as runner-up in their brackets, while Dante Wass earned a 3rd-place finish, continuing to build confidence and consistency.

Boys Varsity West WrestlingThe Dux wrestled a full slate of competition today, wearing the two-piece uniform that represents the Air Force. The day featured a mix of tough matchups, quality wins, and valuable mat time as the team continued to compete through a long schedule. One of the highlights came in round one, where Zeeland West earned a narrow 34-30 win over Coopersville when it came down to the last weight class to win the dual, along with several strong individual performances across all four duals. Zeeland West went 2-3 on the day and placed 8th out of 16 teams, earning wins over Wayland (53-30) and Grand Rapids Christian (41-29), while falling to Kent City (69-11), Allendale (59-23), and Muskegon (55-24). Individual highlights:Aiden Chavez led the way with a perfect 5-0 performance. Austin Ulberg followed with a strong 4-1 day. Xander Adkins, Damien Calderon, Daniel Lozano, and Lachlan Thoreson each finished 3-2, contributing key wins and competitive matches throughout the tournament.The Dux head back to the practice room this week to continue building and improving. Girls Varsity West WrestlingThe Dux girls traveled to Montague today for the Lady Mat Cat Invitational and put together another gritty day of competition. Emmaline Kouw dropped a close semifinal match and finished the tournament in 4th place, while Audrina Knoper showed great resilience, rebounding after an opening-round loss to battle back and earn a 5th-place finish. Amaya Brott wrestled tough throughout the day and came up just one round short of placing, falling in the blood round. Proud of the fight, growth, and perseverance shown by this group. These hard-working ladies will be back on the mat next Saturday at Grand Haven for the Adam H. Provencal Memorial, a special tournament held in honor of a former wrestler whose legacy continues to impact the wrestling community.

Boys Varsity West WrestlingThe Zeeland West Boys Varsity Wrestling Team placed 9th out of 9 teams away at the Ottawa County Championship in Coopersville on Saturday morning. Sr. Aiden Chavez was the Ottawa County Runner-Up going 2-1 dropping a close match in the finals. Srs. Sam Taylor and Austin Ulberg placed 4th going 2-2. Sr. Lachlan Thoreson went 2-2, Sr. Jackson Burkhour and Soph. Camden Stryker went 1-2, and Sr. Kole Walker and Jr. Kye Chayer went 0-2. Varsity Head Coach Cody Stewart mentioned, “The boys wrestled well. They had opportunities to improve and they’ll have more with many more practices. It’s never how you start the season but it’s always how you end it.” Chavez commented, “My matches went ok. Although I was runner-up, there were definitely things that I will need to work on to improve going forward.” The DUX are away at Holland High School on Wednesday, December 17th.

Boys Varsity West BasketballOn Friday night, the Dux were back in action, trying to remain undefeated against Grand Rapids Union. The first half was back and forth with neither team able to get much breathing room. West had five different players score in the first quarter and held a 13-9 lead after the first quarter and a 24-19 lead at the half. In the third quarter, the Dux locked down on defense and held Union to just 7 points, allowing them to stretch their lead to 14 points going into the fourth quarter. Coach Klyn remarked, "The guys got after it in the third. They were tough on the defensive side of the ball and contested every shot, while playing together on offense and sharing the ball, which led to open attempts and layups. It is fun to watch when the ball moves like that." In the first dual of the night, Zeeland West battled Muskegon in a back-and-forth matchup that came down to the final few bouts, ultimately falling 42–30. The team regrouped quickly and came out with purpose in round two, earning a 51–24 victory over Wyoming Kelloggsville. Undefeated varsity wrestlers: Sam Taylor, Austin Ulberg, Thyson Touch, Kenny Howe, Jackson Burkhour, Nolan Overway, Amaya Brott, and Emmaline Kouw all turned in strong performances to open their seasons 2-0. Boys Varsity West BasketballThe Dux started off the season with a win at home on Tuesday night vs. Grand River Prep. The game was back and forth in the first half with the Titans holding a 4-point lead after the first quarter, but the Dux took a three-point lead into halftime behind a strong 10-point second quarter from Maverick Jipping. West got going in the second half behind Gabe Bouwens, who led the Dux with 25 points, including four three-pointers. Logan Nash snagged 5 boards for Dux, and Maverick Jipping started off his varsity career with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. "I was really proud of Gabe. It is exciting to watch a player reap the rewards of all the hours he spent in the gym in the off-season to improve his game. Maverick Jipping was a spark off the bench, getting 10 points in the second quarter and making numerous hustle plays." The Dux start the year off 1-0 and will play Union at home on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.

Dux Beat Dutch in 3 Sets
Girls Varsity West VolleyballThe Zeeland West Varsity Girls Volleyball team dominated from the outset against the Holland Dutch. They won the first 2 sets with ease, had a challenging start to the third set but held it together to get the 3-0 win. Evie Elenbaas led the team in kills with a total of 12, followed by Hannah Vanderzwaag who had 7. Elle Creevy also had a terrific game getting 17 assists. Head Coach Chris Mack had a couple comments on the game, “We came in saying that we wanted to sweep and we did. The third set was a little messy, but we did great the first two games. They were swinging hard and passing well. It got a little sloppy in the third set, but I think, you know, energy wise, we stayed with it the whole time.” Jr. Hannah VanderZwaag stated, “We had a lot of good energy, and I think everyone is happy that we have a five game winning streak.” The Dux face their rivals the Chix on October 16th at home.

Girls Varsity West VolleyballZeeland West Volleyball defeated Holland Tuesday night 3-0. The Dux won 25-10, 25-12, 25-21 behind 12 kills from Evie Elenbaas. Brielle Carlson added 7 kills and Hannah VanderZwaag had 6 kills. Elle Creevy had 17 assists for the Dux. The Dux are now 12-14 overall and 4-5 in conference play. Next up for the Dux is a home match versus Zeeland East on Thursday!

Girls Varsity West GolfThe West varsity golf team placed 6th at the OK Black Conference Tournament held at The Ravines Golf Club today. Aaliyah Le led the Dux with a 114. Allison Purtee added a 115, Gabby Hoekwater a 121, and Brynlee DeYoung a 123. The team also finished 6th for the conference season. The Dux travel to Lincoln Golf Club on Tuesday to compete in the MHSAA Division 2 Region 8 Tournament.

Girls Junior Varsity West GolfThe West girls JV golf team finished in 6th place on Wednesday in the conference tournament held at Spring Lake Country Club. Scoring for the Dux were Hayden Blok and Emma Komejan. The Dux will wrap up their season on Monday with a final conference match at Spring Lake.
