The Zeeland West Athletic Department is excited to announce that we have been cleared to begin working with our student-athletes again! With the Governor lifting restrictions on June 1, outdoor training groups are allowed but required to follow specific guidelines and recommendations. At this time, the situation continues to be fluid and we are still awaiting additional information from the NFHS, MHSAA, and local administration on some of the finer details related to timelines and other important aspects. In order to meet current guidelines, the program must take place outside and will have to abide by all social distancing regulations currently in place.
While we await additional information, we wanted to share our current plan with you to help in planning for what things may look like for your athletes in the coming months. In order to best serve our student-athletes, we have made some slight alterations to the schedule from years prior. We have gone to three different groups that are scheduled to last an hour and fifteen minutes each, with a fifteen minute break between each group. As the summer progresses, it’s our hope that the weight room will be allowed to reopen and the group will be lengthened by approximately fifteen minutes to facilitate that addition to the program.
Dates: June 8th to July 24th with the exception of dead week June 29th – July 5th.
Days: Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday
HS boys (9th-12th)- 7:30-8:45
HS/MS girls(7th-12th)- 9:00-10:15

To sign your son or daughter up, please complete the following form: https://forms.gle/YcG4MNzEhNvEtjtp8 . Please fill out a different form for each child you are signing up for the program. We want the Excel program to be an affordable option for all of Zeeland West athletes and their families. If you or your family are interested in participating in the program, but are struggling financially, please send Mr. Vande Guchte an email at email@example.com to discuss what options are available.
We are excited about the opportunity to begin working with your student-athletes again soon. Please be patient with us as we do our best to communicate any changes in programming based on updated recommendations and guidelines.
This summer we are entering year fourteen of our Excel training at Zeeland West. For those of you who don’t know, prior to teaching and coaching at Zeeland West, Coach Vande Guchte was the Director of Sports Training at Excel-R-ation Physical Therapy and Sports Training for many years. While there, he was responsible for a staff of 3-5 trainers who trained middle school athletes all the way up through professional athletes. In addition to training in our facility, he led ground based training programs at the Hope College Tennis Academy, Saugatuck High School, Holland Christian High School, Griff's Ice Arena, and several other high school teams and small groups of athletes throughout the area.
When the program started here at West, it was one trainer and approximately 15-20 athletes. Over the last fourteen years, the program has developed and grown into 8-12 coaches helping each summer, training between 100-150 athletes from a variety of sports and age groups.
