The Zeeland varsity water polo team defeated West Ottawa on Wednesday night, 11-7. The team was down 1-4 midway through the second quarter but the team rallied back to take a 7-4 in the third quarter. West Ottawa kept the game close in the third bringing the differential down to two goals multiple times. However, strong offense and defense allowed the Chix and Dux to prevail in the fourth quarter.
Spencer DeGraaf and Kaleb DeNeff each had great nights on both ends of the pool. Spencer took charge at the 2-m postion with five goals and four drawn exclusions. Kaleb DeNeff scored from the outside going an impressive four-for-eight on his shots. Both Spencer and Kaleb tallied four steals coming up with pivotal deflections and stops during the entire game.
Aidan VanSoest also had a great night, especially on the defensive end. Aidan's ball denial to the hole set allowed the rest of the team to lock down defensively and not a single goal was allowed from the center of the pool. On the offensive end, he had the first goal of the game that slowed West Ottawa's early momentum and was also a great facilitator generating four assists.
Evan Potter had another solid performance in cage with twelve saves and two steals.
It was a great team win in what should be a very competitive district schedule.
The team plays next this weekend at East Kentwood in the Falcon Invite.
