7th-12th Middle/High School Ladies Group- This group will run from 8:15-9:55 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the periods of June 10-July 26. Athletes are grouped on ability and skill level to insure that drills are performed at the appropriate level and intensity.

9th-10th Guys Group- This group will run from 8:15-9:55 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the periods of June 10-July 26. Athletes are grouped on ability and skill level to insure that drills are performed at the appropriate level and intensity.

6th-8th Middle School Guys Group- This group will run from 10:00-11:40 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday’s during the periods of June 10-July 26. Athletes are grouped on ability and skill level to insure that drills are performed at the appropriate level and intensity.

Due to equipment constraints, each group will be capped to maximize instruction.   Groups may be moved around slightly, time wise, to accommodate the largest group of athletes if necessary or a group may be eliminated if there is not enough interest. If a time slot fills up, a wait list will be started and a decision will be made regarding whether another group is necessary. An additional group is not guaranteed, so families are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible to insure a spot.

Signups will begin on Friday, May 10th and will be done through the Zeeland West Athletics website. Payment is required in the athletic office before their spot is locked in.  The price for Excel is $125.  Please make your check out to Zeeland West Excel and drop it off in the athletic office.   Most training and skill work will take place in small groups whenever possible to increase form, technique, and skill development as well as the efficiency of the workout.

Program History

This summer we are entering year thirteen of our Excel training here at Zeeland West. For those of you who don’t know, prior to teaching and coaching here at Zeeland West, Coach Vande Guchte was the Director of Sports Training at Excel-R-ation Physical Therapy and Sports Training for many years. While there, he was responsible for a staff of 3-5 trainers who trained middle school athletes all the way up through professional athletes. In addition to training in our facility, he led ground based training programs at the Hope College Tennis Academy, Saugatuck High School, Holland Christian High School, Griff's Ice Arena, and several other teams and small groups of athletes throughout the area.

When the program started here at West, it was one trainer and approximately 15-20 athletes. Over the last thirteen years, the program has developed and grown into between 5-12 coaches helping each summer, training between 100-150 athletes from a variety of sports and age groups.

With the increase in athletes came the need for more equipment. Thanks to strong support and investment from our principals, athletic directors, and several teams over the last few years, we have moved to a far more complex training program that uses some very expensive, but effective equipment. This equipment is the same equipment that the top strength and conditioning programs, as well as professional and collegiate sports teams are using across the country. We feel this a tremendous opportunity for our athletes!  Last year we were able to secure the donation of a sport court to cover the concrete floor in the multi-purpose room, which has helped to further advance the possibilities and potential of the program.
