Congratulations to junior Rylee Smith for earning All State honors for Division 2 in golf.  This is a reflection of her solid play throughout the entire season and state tournament.  Great job and well done Rylee!  

The West varsity golf team celebrates our seniors as conference play ended last week.  Both Kairi Beckwith and Natalie Kernstock have had wonderful senior seasons for the team.  Kairi lowered her 9 hole average 3.6 strokes from last year while Natalie has improved by 8.4 strokes for 9 holes.  Our team accomplishments this year are due to their contributions throughout the season.  Kairi and Natalie have represented West very well and they had a positive impact on our golf program.  Thank you Kairi and Natalie!  

There will be a series of free hitting sessions at Kris Tees Driving Range for any West girl interested in playing golf this fall.

West Girls Golf - Fall 22' 

Team tryouts will take place on Monday August 8, 2022, at Kris Tees Driving Range on 96th.  Players are reminded that they need to take care of everything on FinalForms (green across the board) to tryout on August 8 except the small fee to participate.  This includes a yearly physical that needs to be completed each school year. 

We will work on the driving range and putting green at 8:00 a.m. and will end at 9:30 a.m.  After the first try-out players will be invited back for a second try-out on Tuesday, August 9 at Kris Tees at the same time and procedure as the previous day.  We will play 9 holes at Crestview Golf Course in Borculo on Wednesday the 10th at 7:30 a.m.  Team selection will be made (if necessary) and a team meeting will take place following the try-out on Wednesday so players should arrange their schedules accordingly.  We should be done around 10:00 a.m.

Please plan to be early to the try-out sessions.  We will begin working at 8:00 a.m. on Monday the 8th, so your promptness is appreciated.  You will need to bring your clubs, balls, tees, and golf or tennis shoes.  All players can either carry their clubs or use a pull cart for try-out rounds and the season.  There is no cost to the players for trying out for the team. 

Between 15-25 players will be selected to be part of the 2022 Team, which includes Varsity and Junior Varsity.  The number selected depends on scoring dispersion and team needs.

Remember, to be eligible to try-out you must be in the ninth through twelfth grade and have completed all of the steps to compete through FinalForms. 

The following list of criteria will be used as part of the 2022 team selection process:

• Attitude and conduct off the golf course
• Attitude and conduct on the golf course
• Playing by and knowledge of the USGA Rules of Golf
• Playing ability and showing improvement from past year, if applicable
• Using solid golf etiquette
• Have good practice habits and practice all parts of the game
• Be able to accept and respond to coaching
• Support your teammates by encouraging their play
• Take care of yourself physically and mentally by eating, sleeping and exercising correctly
• Being able to keep the game in perspective and remember it is a game.  

The team schedule (matches and competitions only) may be found at zeelandwestathletics.com.  Additional events will be added as we closer to the season but you can get a fairly accurate picture of the season in terms of conference matches from the website listed above.  We will most likely end up with approximately 15 events for varsity and 12 for junior varsity.   A link to both the junior varsity and varsity schedules including practices will be provided to players and their families on  August 10.

The OK Green Conference celebrated all of the seniors last night at Crestview.  The team congratulates Anika Doan (left), Morgan Smith (center), and Avery Vugteveen (right) on their accomplishments to the West program throughout their high school careers.  Very well done ladies!  

The West varsity girls golf team won the Holland OK Green Jamboree held at Clearbrook Golf Club today.  Rylee Smith led all scores wtih a 41.  Morgan Smith placed 3rd overall with  43.  Kairi Beckwith added a 48 and Anika Doan contributed a 50.  The team travels to Pigeon Creek Golf Course tomorrow to compete in the Unity Christian Invitational.  

The West varsity girls golf team placed 4th at the Grand Rapids Union Jamboree held at The Mines Golf Course yesterday afternoon.  The Dux were led by Rylee Smith with a 42.  Anika Doan added a 47, Morgan Smith a 52, and Kairi Beckwith a 58.  The team travels to Clearbrook Golf Course on Wednesday to compete in the Holland Jamboree.  

There will be hitting sessions held at Kris Tees Driving Range next week Monday through Wednesday and running the following week.  These are totally voluntary and are free to attend to any interested girl golfer entering West this fall.  The sessions will include hitting on the range and the short game area.
