Win: 63 - 57
The Dux pulled out another hard fought win on the road Thursday night beating Mona Shores 63-57.  Zeeland West got off to a quick ten point lead behind great defense and Travis Vredeveld with seven first quarter points.  The Sailors battled back and hit a buzzer beater three to tie the game at 15 going into the second quarter.  The second half was back and forth with Mona Shores taking a 3 point lead into the half.  Freshmen coach and assistant varsity coach said, "We knew at the half it was going to be a tight game the rest of the way.  Told the boys to finish them off just like our freshmen did earlier in the night."  Mason Bakker come out strong in the second half and had 11 points in the third quarter and was a load inside.  Eli Steffen's runner (22 points) at the buzzer tied the game going into the 4th quarter.  The Dux had a quick start to the fourth quarter going up seven and not looking back with the Sailors never getting closer than three points.  After the game Coach Klyn commented, "Mason, Carson, and Eli came up big for us in the second half.  Eli gave us 10 points and had a calming effect taking care of the ball.  Carson gave us numerous second chances on the offensive end with his hustle and rebounding.  Mason gave us 16 points in the second half and was a tough matchup."  He also said, players 1-13 have bought into their roles on the team and it has made it a lot of fun to coach this group.  The guys who haven't been getting many minutes in games have really prepared the guys who are getting more minutes in games during practice."  Zeeland West (4-0) has 8 days off before their next game in which they will be at home for a matchup with Comstock Park on Dec. 21.

Win: 63 - 59
The Dux traveled to Coopersville on Tuesday night and pulled out a hard fought win by the score of 63-59.  West got off to a hot start by going up 16-4 behind 10 first quarter points from Mason Bakker and 4 points from Caleb Smith..  Coopersville chipped away at the lead with the score being 20 to 12 after one quarter.  The Broncos continued continued to charge and cut the lead to 32-30 at the half.  West added a point to their lead and had a 47-44 lead at the end of the third quarter.  The Broncos made a run and took a five point lead with just a few minutes to go in the game.  The Dux regrouped and had a couple of key buckets by Bakker and some strong defense from Evan Eding and Tanner Thompson.  The Dux finished the game on a 9-1 run and won by 4 points.  Coach Klyn said after the game, "We needed some stops in the fourth quarter and a number of guys stepped up.  Eding's steal and layup out of the timeout flipped the momentum and got our guys going. Tanner, Eding, and Gulker all took charges in the second half for us."  Bakker led the team with a team high 26 points and had numerous key buckets.  A number of other players contributed with 11 points from Gulker, seven points from Steffen, six points from Vredeveld and Thompson, and five points from Caleb Smith. The Dux are in action again later this week when they head to Mona Shores for a rare Thursday night game.

Boys Varsity West Basketball vs. Reeths-Puffer High School

Win: 59 - 54
The Zeeland West Boy's Basketball went on the road to Reeths Puffer trying to avenge a double-digit loss to Puffer last year.  Puffer returned all of their players so the Dux knew it would be a tough challenge.  The Dux jumped out to a 7-0 run and went to the first quarter break with a 17-9 lead.  West was able to stretch the lead to 8 points behind Eli Steffen (19 points) and Mason Bakker (18 points) getting off to a quick start.  Coach Brian Cochran who was filling in for Coach Klyn on Friday night said, "I thought it was important that we handle their pressure early and get off to a good start.  I guess I will be leading the pregame speeches from now on!"  The second quarter things started to get very physical and Puffer made a run at the Dux after they jumped out to a double-digit lead. The Dux held on to the lead by six at the half even with starters Carson Gulker (12 points) and Mason Bakker in foul trouble.  R.P. chipped away at the lead a little more by the end of the third quarter to cut the lead to four points and had momentum on their side along with junior point guard Eli Steffen going down with cramps for the Dux.   He had to sit almost the entire fourth quarter as well.  Evan Eding, coming off a wrist injury, filled in nicely for the Dux.     The game got chippy in the fourth quarter with players diving into the stands and fouls a plenty.  The Dux had their backs against the wall and went down four points midway through the fourth quarter, but fought back behind a big fourth quarter from Mason Bakker to take a 1 point lead with a little over a minute to go.  Carson Gulker and Travis Vredeveld knocked down clutch free throws with under a minute to go to seal the game and head home with a five point win, 59-54.  After the game coach Brian Cochran said,  "I thought our guys on the bench gave us a ton of energy in the fourth when we needed it and things weren't going our way. They were a big advantage for us."  When asked about getting his first varsity coaching win and taking over for Klyn for good Cochran replied,  "It was a lot of fun to fill in and many people asked me to take over for Coach Klyn, but in the words of George Costanza, "All right!  That's it for me!  Good night everybody!"  The Dux have a busy week coming up and will be in action at Coopersville on Tuesday night and at Mona Shores on Thursday night.

Win: 65 - 42
The Dux came out strong in the first game of the year on Tuesday night.  Tanner Thompson opened up the scoring with a three off of the assist from Carson Gulker. (11 points)  West never looked back and jumped out to a 17-4 lead with solid defense which led to fast break layups.  The Dux continued to share the ball with crisp passing and great ball movement which led to open shots and helped stretch the lead to 37-15 at the half.  Coach Klyn said after the game, "I was really impressed with how well we shared the ball.  Our guys did a great job making the extra pass and passing up good shots for great shots."  The second half the Dux continued their aggressive defense and pushed the lead to almost 30 points.  10 of 13 players scored in a 65-42 win.  The two returning seniors got off to a good start.  Mason Bakker led the Dux with 14 points and Nathan Beyer added six points.  Returning junior, Eli Steffen, pitched in with 10 points.  West will be back in action for a boy's tripleheader on Friday at Reeths Puffer.
