Boys Varsity West Basketball vs. Reeths-Puffer HS School

Game Date
Dec 7, 2018
Score
: 59
REETHS-PUFFER HIGH SCHOOL: 54

The Zeeland West Boy's Basketball went on the road to Reeths Puffer trying to avenge a double-digit loss to Puffer last year.  Puffer returned all of their players so the Dux knew it would be a tough challenge.  The Dux jumped out to a 7-0 run and went to the first quarter break with a 17-9 lead.  West was able to stretch the lead to 8 points behind Eli Steffen (19 points) and Mason Bakker (18 points) getting off to a quick start.  Coach Brian Cochran who was filling in for Coach Klyn on Friday night said, "I thought it was important that we handle their pressure early and get off to a good start.  I guess I will be leading the pregame speeches from now on!"  The second quarter things started to get very physical and Puffer made a run at the Dux after they jumped out to a double-digit lead. The Dux held on to the lead by six at the half even with starters Carson Gulker (12 points) and Mason Bakker in foul trouble.  R.P. chipped away at the lead a little more by the end of the third quarter to cut the lead to four points and had momentum on their side along with junior point guard Eli Steffen going down with cramps for the Dux.   He had to sit almost the entire fourth quarter as well.  Evan Eding, coming off a wrist injury, filled in nicely for the Dux.     The game got chippy in the fourth quarter with players diving into the stands and fouls a plenty.  The Dux had their backs against the wall and went down four points midway through the fourth quarter, but fought back behind a big fourth quarter from Mason Bakker to take a 1 point lead with a little over a minute to go.  Carson Gulker and Travis Vredeveld knocked down clutch free throws with under a minute to go to seal the game and head home with a five point win, 59-54.  After the game coach Brian Cochran said,  "I thought our guys on the bench gave us a ton of energy in the fourth when we needed it and things weren't going our way. They were a big advantage for us."  When asked about getting his first varsity coaching win and taking over for Klyn for good Cochran replied,  "It was a lot of fun to fill in and many people asked me to take over for Coach Klyn, but in the words of George Costanza, "All right!  That's it for me!  Good night everybody!"  The Dux have a busy week coming up and will be in action at Coopersville on Tuesday night and at Mona Shores on Thursday night.
