MONA SHORES HIGH SCHOOL: 5

The Dux finished the Milan Miracle Tournament 2-0 Saturday afternoon by beating Mona Shores 8-5 in a well played back and forth 10-inning game.

Mona Shores jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Dux tied the game in the top of the second when Taylor Zwagerman reached on a walk and scored when a hard fly ball hit by Brinzie Kalkman was misplayed. Mona recaptured the lead in the bottom of the fourth to have the Dux answer again in the top of the fifth when Emily Brands hit her first HS career home run over the left field fence to tie the game at 2.

The game stayed tied through the regular seven innings forcing the game to the 8th and international tie breaker. With a runner on second base, Kenzie Siersma hit a homerun to left field to put the Dux up 4-2, but it didn't hold up as Mona Shores answered in the bottom of the inning scoring two as well.

In the ninth inning the Dux scored again when Brands hit a hard single to left scoring Kalkman who was moved to third base by a well executed sac bunt by Jordyn Smeyers. It wasn't enough, Mona fought back and also plated one in the bottom of the inning.

Starting the tenth inning, Siersma was intentionally walked putting runners on first and second with no outs. Elexia Fuentes reached on an error when we attempted a sac bunt to move the runners, so the Dux had bases loaded. Zwagerman then hits a single to center field scoring Brower and Siersma. Kalkman walks putting runners on the corners, and Jordyn Smeyers singles to shallow left scoring Fuentes, but Mona Shores throws out Kalkman advancing to second. The three runs were enough as the Dux shut down Mona in the bottom of the 10th to win the game 8-5.

Brands started the game on the mound and pitched a solid four innings allowing two runs on six hits, striking out 3 and walking zero.

Siersma came in the fifth and picked up the win on the mound. She threw six innings allowing 3 hits, striking out 6 and walking zero.

It was a great pitching combination for the Dux tonight. They complimented each other well and both didn't allow any free bases in the victory.

Dux offense was led by Brands who went 3 for 5. Smeyers and Siersma both went 2 for 4, and Zwagerman, Fuentes, and Morgan Rush each contributed a hit.

Dux defense turned two double plays in the game with two nice line drive put outs by Brands from the mound and Siersma from shortstop.

Dux improved to 15-12 on the season. Their next games will be OK Green Conference games at home against Bryon Center on Thursday 5/16 starting at 4pm.
