The Zeeland West Boys Varsity Soccer team got off to a great start to the regular season by going 3-0 at the Wayland invitational soccer tournament today. The Dux started things off well with a 3-0 win over Coopersville. The Dux controlled possession through most of the game and really put a clamp defensively on the Coopersville attack. Micah Henry got the scoring going half way through the 1st half as Brandon Taylor from his center back position played a beautiful through ball that found Henry's feet and he did the rest slipping it by the Broncos keeper. The half ended 1-0. Trigve Elkins added to the Dux score just 1:32 into the 2nd half after Micah Henry had hos shot stopped and Trigve was there to clean it up and make it 2-0. The Dux finished off the scoring when again Taylor from his defensive position slipped another ball through to a streaking Henry who calmly put it away. The Dux got a well deserved break before their 2nd game against the host Wayland Wildcats. This game featured several opportunities for both teams but none found the back of the net. The closest for the Dux came from Andrew Zimmer as his shot in the 2nd half hit the top cross bar. Lucas Smith made his presence known in net as he made several key saves to keep the hosts off the scoreboard. He simply played outstanding. The game finished in a 0-0 tie and went ot a penalty shootout. The Dux went first as Trigve Elkins stepped to the spot and on the whistle rifled th ball past a diving Wildcat keeper to put the Dux up 1-0. The score tied up after Wayland's first shooter found the back of the net. Pace Bittrick stepped up next for the Dux and hit his shot which was saved by the Wayland keeper but the spin of the ball carried it over the goal line to put the Dux up 2-1. The next Wayland shooter hit the top left part of the crossbar which kept the lead 2-1. Jehu Cavada stepped up next for the Dux but his shot was stopped clean by the Wildcat keeper. The next shooter for Wayland stepped up and hit a great shot that was saved by Lucas Smith. The officials called Smith for movement off of his line which gave the Wayland shooter another shot. Again Smith was up to the challenge as he made another outstanding save to keep it 2-1. Next up for the Dux was Austin O'Connell who smoothly played his shot low and under a diving Wildcat keeper to put the Dux up 3-1. The 4th shooter for Wayland calmly played his shot opposite of a diving Smith to close the gap to 3-2. The 5th shooter for the Dux was Micah Henry who stepped up to the shot and confidently put his shot away to seal the victory for the Dux in an exciting 2nd game. The Dux had little time to celebrate or rest as they played their last of 3 games immediately following the shootout. The Dux 3rd opponent was Grand Rapids West Michigan Aviation. The Dux again got on the board 1st as Micah Henry went unassisted over the keeper to go up 1-0. The half would end that way with 30 more minutes separating the Dux from a clean sheet and tournament champions. The Dux found the back of the net 2 more times in the 2nd half on goals by Trigve Elkins on a nice turn and shoot that found the corner on an assist from Pace Bittrick and Joel Meengs finished the scoring off a header on a corner from Micah that somehow slipped into the corner of the goal. The Dux finished the day undefeated and with out conceding a goal in regulation. a great start to a promising season.
