Boys Varsity West Soccer vs. Holland HS School

Game Date
Sep 6, 2022

The boys varsity soccer team headed into the game against Holland as underdogs and walked out on top for the 1st time in countless years.  The Dux came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Holland 3-2 at Holland last night.  The Dutch got on the board quickly as they went up 1-0 in the 1st 10 minutes and then answered again shortly after.  The Dux started to find their groove and began playing some very good possession oriented soccer, creating opportunities and limiting Holland's.  The Dux outplayed the Dutch for most of the 1st half but could not break through and the score remained 2-0 at the half.  At half we talked about the 1st 10 minutes and what we did so well the rest of the half.  We knew we were dictating play and could hang with them but we needed to get the ball in the back of the net and that's exactly what happened just 2 minutes and 18 seconds into the 2nd half.  Micah Henry found the ball at his feet, turned to his left and hit a ball that found its way through the Dutch keeper's hands from about 25 yds. away to get the Dux on the board.  It didn't take long for us to equalize as 12 seconds later, Sammy Salas took a deflected pass, played it to Josiah Faucher who then returned it to Salas who took a couple of more dribbles and rifled it past the Dutch Keeper.  The Dux kept the pressure on but Holland would not concede anything and had a few scoring opportunities themselves but the Dux keeper Lucas Smith found himself in the right position to make those saves.  17 minutes into the 2nd half a shot was deflected by the Dutch keeper and trickled to the left side of goal when Ivan Michmerhuizen made a long run onto the ball and finished it to give the Dux a 3-2 lead, one they would not relinquish.  The boys responded in a way I have not seen much of in the last 10 years.  The effort they put in against a solid Holland team speaks volumes about what this team can do and who we are.  It was as exciting as I can remember and to do it against such a quality opponent was very special and something this team can remember for a long time.  This I hope is a spring board to continue on an upward trend to truly do something special this year.  The Dux next travel to Muskegon to play the Big Reds on Thursday at 5:30.
