The Zeeland West girls varsity soccer team got off to a fast start en route to an 8-0 victory in their season opener at home against Wyoming Tuesday night. Mya Frego and Sam Koppenol each scored a hat trick, while Jordyn Klaasen converted a penalty kick and Rachel McFall added a goal as well.
The Dux were unselfish in the attack, assisting on 7 of the 8 goals. Klaasen led the team with 4 assists, while Rylee Smith, Koppenol and Caiti Grant each dished out an assist.
Defensively, the Dux had a strong showing and did not give up a shot on goal the entire match. Mallory Allen earned her first career shutout as a starting goal keeper.
"For most of the match, we were able to move the ball pretty decisively and did a decent job of changing the point of attack. We were aggressive through the midfield which allowed us to generate numerous scoring chances in a variety of ways tonight. Overall, our girls should be pleased with their performance and the outcome of tonight's match. A solid start to a challenging week."
The Dux are 1-0 in the OK Green, and 1-0 overall for the season. They return to action Thursday night when they travel to Grand Rapids Union for another OK Green Conference match, before heading to St. Joe on Friday for a non-conference match.
