The Dux varsity soccer team celebrated senior night with an opening conference tournament victory, defeating Grand Rapids Union by a score of 2-1. Both goals for the Dux came in the first half. Rylee Terpstra scored off of a beautiful corner kick from Rylee Smith. Less than 10 minutes later, Jordyn Klaasen slipped in behind the Union back line and drove to the near post before slotting a ball to Marissa Ybarra. Ybarra's first touch redirected the ball across the goal mouth to Smith, who calmly fired it into the back of the net. The game got a little interesting when a Union counter attack led to a break away, resulting in a goal for Union. But the Dux defense stood tall and preserved the victory.

"What a nice way to send our seniors out! We played within our system and style of play really well in the first half, carrying much of the play through the midfield. Union can be a dangerous team on the counter attack, but our back 3 did a good job most of the night in handling that pressure. So happy for our team, especially our 12 seniors. Really thankful for who they are, how they lead, and what they bring to our team every day."

The Dux will face the winner of Muskegon and Mona Shores in the second round of the OK Green Conference Tournament on Thursday. Time and place TBD.
