It is said that every journey begins with a single step. The Dux varsity soccer team took a positive first step as they opened their 2022 season by defeating Coopersville, 5-0. The first 10 minutes were fairly evenly matched, but it was a scramble in front of goal that tilted the momentum of the match and the Dux never looked back. Although the first goal was technically an own goal, it was the combination play between Abby Winn, Amarra Blattner and Anna Miller that forced the issue.

"Coopersville has speed up top, but our back line managed the opening minutes with poise under pressure. For a first game and some new pieces, we defended really intelligently and were able to play out of the back, especially early on."

Abby Winn would add two more goals before half to give the Dux a 3-0 lead at the break. The first goal was unassisted as she intercepted a pass near midfield and slipped through the back line before tucking the ball into the corner. Her second came off of an unselfish pass by Anna Miller.

In the second half, the Dux kept the foot on the gas, dominating time of possession, shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks. "We really wore them down in the second half and moved the ball really well, creating numerous quality chances. Our midfield and defensive units did a great job of filling gaps and distributing the ball, especially the second half. They were all over the field, putting out fires, creating opportunities and quality chances in the final third." Amarra Blattner made it 4-0 from a slotted ball from Winn. Marissa Ybarra closed the scoring off of a beautiful flick from Izzy Schoenberg. Grace Caywood and Samarah Arendsen combined for the shutout for the Dux.

"Tonight was a quality win against a talented team. Scoring the early goal gave us a boost of confidence and allowed us to settle in defensively. It was a great team win, I am very proud of our kids for the manner in which they carried themselves throughout the match."

The Dux return to action on Monday when they travel to Holland Christian for another non-conference match. The Dux are 1-0-0 on the season.
