UNION HIGH SCHOOL: 2

In the opening round of the OK Green Soccer tournament, the Dux varsity team defeated the Red Hawks of Grand Rapids Union, 3-2. Aaliyah Ybarra opened the scoring after converting on a penalty kick, giving the Dux a 1-0 lead. An unlucky sequence of events allowed the Red Hawks to tie the game 1-1. First, a misplaced ball was picked off in midfield and miscleared by the Dux. The misclear resulted in a breakaway, but Grace Caywood stepped out to cut off the angle. The shot appeared to be going wide before deflecting off a Dux defender and into the back of the net.

The Dux responded shortly before the half when Abby Winn bent a low driven ball around the inside of the Union wall and into the back of the net off a direct kick.

Union once again knotted the score at 2-2 after intercepting an errant pass out of the back and firing a quick shot over the head of Caywood. But the Dux continued to battle. Keke Segura received a back pass from Abby Gruppen near the top of the box and fired a cross towards the center of the field. Zoe Grant outjumped the keeper and headed the ball over her outstretched hands and into the back of the net, securing the win for the Dux.

"Really proud of our defensive effort tonight. Union has a lethal counter attack, and for the most part we handled that much better than the first time we played them. We continue improving in maintaining possession and made it difficult for them to get any sort of offensive rhythm in the game. All week we have been stressing the importance of stringing passes together and being patient offensively. Tonight, that patience worked to our advantage and we were able to make them chase the game a bit. We showed poise and resilience tonight, by staying composed when they tied the game. Other than those two minor miscues, we played well and are happy to be moving up in the tournament."

The Dux travel to face the number one seed Mona Shores on Thursday, in the second round of the conference tournament.
