The Dux girls varsity soccer team lost a tough match against perennial powerhouse Unity Christian, 1-5. Despite a seemingly lopsided score, it was the Dux that came out strong and dictated play in the opening 20 minutes, possessing the ball, controlling the midfield, and absorbing pressure from the Unity attack. During this span, the Dux outshot Unity Christian 5-1, and hit two crossbars, but were unable to find the back of the net. "Hitting two crossbars in a span of 5 minutes is tough. If they are 2" lower, there may have been a different outcome."

The momentum shifted a bit when Unity scored two goals in a span of 5 minutes off of corner kicks. A short time later they added a third goal after converting a penalty kick, and added one more just before half. "To be honest, we were disappointed in the score after the first half. We didn't allow many opportunities, but they capitalized on the ones they were given, and we did not."

During halftime, the Dux regrouped and continued to play even the remainder of the match. The Dux narrowed the lead to 4-1 when Tia Martinez intercepted a ball in the back and drove towards the middle of the field, before laying it into the feet of Abby Winn. Winn slotted a quick ball through to Zoe Grant who got in behind the Crusader's back line and slipped the ball past the keeper. Winn had two free kicks that were within inches of finding the top of the net, and a shot that hit the crossbar, but much like the first half, the Dux could not convert. 

"Despite the final score, our kids played their hearts out and competed with a very talented and aggressive team. Soccer is a game of inches and momentum, tonight, we were a bit unlucky and came up a bit short. But we continue to make positive strides towards where we want to be as we enter the tournament portion of our season. Really proud of our resilience and mentality tonight."

The Dux wrap up there regular season on Friday when the travel to Muskegon to take on the Big Reds.
