ALLENDALE HIGH SCHOOL: 2
The Zeeland West Varsity Girls Soccer team opened their season with a 4-2 win over Allendale. The game was shortened and called at halftime due to unsafe field conditions. Despite the cold and snow, the Dux jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game when Kylee Winn (SR) took a throw on the left hand side deep in Allendale's defensive end. Sam Hecht (SR) received the throw, turned to the inside of the field and fired a left footed shot into the back of the net.
The Dux made it 2-0 less than 5 minutes later when Hecht held off an Allendale defender before slipping a ball across the top of the box to Abby Winn (FR). Winn calmly turned and slipped the ball to the right of keeper.
Despite dominating possession for much of the opening 20 minutes, Allendale would climb back into the game, scoring 2 goals in a span of 8 minutes, knotting the score at 2-2 with about 15 minutes to go in the half.
The Dux retook control of the lead when Marielle Michmerhuizen (SO) fired a point blank shot past the keeper off of a beautiful cross by Abby Winn. Sam Hecht got her second goal of the game late in the first half off of a Kylee Winn corner kick. Winn's corner to the far post found the left foot of Hecht, whose left footed blast gave the keeper no chance.
"I thought we played reasonable well considering we have been practicing in a gym the last two weeks. We definitely have areas where we can improve, but our movement off of the ball at times was really nice. Defensively, we have not been able to get outside and work on our scheme, and we got caught a couple of times because of miscommunication and incorrect positioning. Taylor Twork (GK - 3 saves) played a solid game for us in net, making 2 great saves on breakaways to protect our lead early on, which gave us some confidence in back. Overall, I was pleased with our effort today and our ability to execute at times despite not being able to practice many game-like situations due to the weather this spring. I look forward to working with this group as we move through our season."
