Girls Varsity West Soccer vs. Holland HS School

Game Date
May 21, 2018
Score
: 2
HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL: 0

The Dux girls varsity soccer team overcame less than ideal conditions in putting together their most complete match of the season, extending their unbeaten streak to 6 games as they beat the Dutch, 2-0. Tally Martinez scored both goals for the Dux, one in each half. The Dux dominated possession and defended well from the beginning. Ryleigh Farrell made a HUGE save in the opening ten minutes on a breakaway for the Dutch. Farrell charged out, taking the shot of the chest in denying Holland's lone goal scoring opportunity. "Ryleigh's save early in the game really helped settle us down defensively, providing us with a huge boost of confidence. We became more organized and tightened up considerably after that first save."

Holland's goalkeeper was tested early and often, making 4 or 5 critical saves in the first half to keep the score 0-0. However, the Dux would strike first off of a throw-in deep in Dutch territory. Martinez threw the ball in to Raegina Pung near the top of the box. Pung's perfectly weighted one touch ball back gave Martinez a great opportunity to send a curling ball towards the far post and into the back of the net. "Everyone was excited about the quality of Tally's first finish, but Pung's touch was a thing of beauty. We work on this in practice and for the girls to be rewarded for executing it perfectly was awesome!" The Dux took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half began with a bang as Sam Hecht took a shot off the opening kickoff that had a chance of going in, which put the Dutch on their heels right away. "We wanted to come out strong in the second half, and we did that. Our midfield play tonight was superb! Callie Dobrinski, Josie Bos, and Andrea Valdes did a great job of controlling the middle, while Kylee Winn, Tally Martinez and Morghan Van Dyke were dangerous on the outside for us. We were physical, aggressive, and had really good touch considering the conditions. We made it hard for Holland to get into any sort of offensive rhythm tonight."

The Dux nearly made it 2-0 after Sam Hecht got in behind the Dutch defense and lofted and clever little ball to the far post. Unfortunately, Pung's header caromed off the crossbar and the Dutch would clear. Martinez scored her second goal in almost the exact same fashion has her first. This time it was Hecht delivering the perfect touch before Martinez sent another curling ball towards the back post and into the back of the net.

"Very pleased with our overall attitude, energy and execution tonight in all phases of the game. Great team win which sets us up with a lot of confidence going into our season finale against Byron Center on Wednesday."
