HOLLAND CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL: 0
After a sluggish start offensively in the first half, the Dux girls varsity soccer team bounced back in the second half, scoring twice to defeat Holland Christian, 2-0. Josie Bos nearly gave the Dux a 1-0 lead early in the second half, but her volley from point blank amazingly was stopped by the keeper. A missed penalty kick by the Dux kept the score 0-0. A deep throw-in by Kylee Winn resulted in Marielle Michmerhuizen pouncing on a loose ball in front of the HC net. Michmerhuizen's toe poke on the ball was enough to put it past the onrushing HC goal keeper giving the Dux a 1-0 lead. Josie Bos' hustle and anticipation earned her the second goal of the match. After being fouled outside the box, Kylee Winn stood over the ensuing free kick with Sam Hecht. Hecht sent a hard low shot that bent around the HC wall of defenders that was headed to the far corner. The HC keeper got her fingers on it but Bos was there to slam home the rebound.
"Honestly, we did not play very well offensively in the first half, and I reminded our team at halftime how much simpler and more effective our style of play is designed to be. The biggest difference between the first and second halves came down to mental toughness and execution. Mentally, we came out more focused and executed our game plan much better in the second half, which resulted in better offensive chances. Defensively, we ran a bit ragged in the first half because of some silly mental errors and by not possessing the ball very well. I am really proud of the way our team responded after halftime. HC was dangerous in the first half, and we got outplayed. We were able to flip the script in the second half and scored two really important goals."
Ryleigh Farrell and Taylor Twork combined for the 3rd shutout in a row for the Dux. The win propels the Dux to a record of 5-5-4 on the season, 2-5-2 in the OK Green.
