Boys Junior Varsity West Basketball vs. Holland HS School

Game Date
Feb 13, 2020
Score
: 69
HOLLAND HIGH SCHOOL: 44

A second quarter surge and points from ten different players led to a 69-44 win over Holland on Thursday night for the JV Dux. Hunter Busscher ('22) came off the bench and scored seven points in the fourth quarter, and Eli Mack ('22) returned from a preseason injury to score his first point on the season.

"The exciting thing about our team is that every guy on the roster is more than capable to contributing to victories in some way," Coach Ray said. "Guys like Hunter and Eli have been pushing some of our starters in practice all season. They have made our team better, and they have improved individually along the way."

After a 15-13 first quarter in favor of the Dux, the team came out with a newfound intensity in the second quarter, pushing the lead to 40-15 at halftime.

"Our first quarter seemed to be a carry-over from our last game," Coach Ray said. "We were sloppy, not communicating on defense, and allowing Holland's shooters to heat up. In the second quarter, our guys took it upon themselves to not let that happen again."

Drew Weenum ('22) led the way with 18 points, while Cade Overweg ('22) chipped in 14 points.

"Cade played ultra-aggressive, yet under control throughout the whole game," Coach Ray said. "I thought he found the perfect balance in his game tonight, and it helped us immensely."

The win moves the team's record to 12-3 (8-1). The Dux will travel to Hamilton on Tuesday, February 18 as part of a program triple-header. The Freshmen team will tip off at 4:00pm, with JV to follow at 5:30pm and Varsity at 7:00pm.
