GRANDVILLE HIGH SCHOOL: 54

Zeeland West had an opportunity to win one more home game Tuesday night,  get revenge from an early season loss, and earn a chance to play their classmates again Thursday night if they could beat Grandville Tuesday night.  Winning over Grandville fulfilled all three of those on Tuesday night with the Dux knocking off Grandville 57-54.  West started off the game ice cold and flat.  Their first two points didn't come until Coach Klyn had used two timeouts and they were down 12-0.  It got worse as the Dux only salvaged one more free throw in the first quarter and trailed 22-3.  The Dux battled back to cut the lead to 12 early in the second quarter, but Grandville responded with a 8-0 run to stretch the lead to 30-10 with only a 4:30 left in the half.  Senior, Avery Alderink, started the turnaround by hitting a three to give the Dux some life.  The Dux carried that hope to the defensive side of the ball and made a 12-0 run and holding Grandville scoreless the last 3:30 of the half.  It was capped off by two huge plays from freshmen Luke Bakker in the final 14 seconds.  Bakker stepped in and took a charge on one end and then caught an airball on the other end and flipped it in with 1 second left on the clock to cut the deficit to 32-25.  The Dux came out strong in the 3rd quarter scoring the first 13 points of the half and holding Grandville to zero points for the first 5:15 seconds of the third quarter.  At that point the Dux held the lead 38-32 lead following a 25-0 run spanning two halves.  From that point on it was a back and forth game with 7 lead changes.  Late in the fourth with 1 minute to go, Kylan Arnold, made a timely bucket inside to give the West the lead 54-52.  After a defensive stop senior, Walt Bouvier, found freshmen, Merritt Alderink, for another basket at the rim to put the Dux up 4.  Grandville answered quickly to cut the lead back to two.  The Dux inbounded vs. pressure and Avery Alderink was fouled with 11.7 to go and headed to the line for a 1 and 1.  Avery missed the first, but senior Carson Gulker would not be denied.  He battled for the rebound and came up with the ball forcing Grandville to foul him.  Carson went the the line and made 1 out of 2 giving the Dux the lead 57-54.  The Dux fouled Grandville so they couldn't get off a 3 point attempt.  Grandville missed the first shot and tipped the ball out of bounds giving the Dux the win.  West will travel across the path to East on Thursday night to face the Chix in the third matchup of the year in the District Semifinal at 7 p.m.
