The Dux varsity soccer team defeated Holland 5-4 in an exciting game on turf. The Dux jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Sam Hecht (SR) laid a ball into the path of Abby Winn (FR). Winn cut the ball back across the defender and drove into the box before burying a point blank shot from the left side. Despite controlling the tempo and outpossessing the Dutch, the Dux were unable to add to their lead. The Dutch would equalize with less than a minute to go in the first half.
In the second half, the two teams combined for 7 goals! The Dux came out firing in the second half, but it was the Dutch who scored first less than 5 minutes into the second. Winn would even the score shortly thereafter by intercepting a pass in the midfield and driving down the right hand side. After getting past the last defender, she fired a shot up and over the shoulder of the GK at the near post. Less than 5 minutes later, Tally Martinez (JR) gathered a ball near midfield and slotted a ball in behind the Dutch defense. Winn scored her third goal of the night in nearly the exact same fashion as her second, giving the Dux a 3-2 lead. The Dutch would equalize 3-3, before Hecht gave the Dux the lead for good.
Leanne Wyrick (SO) won a ball at midfield and played a great first time ball into Hecht at the top of the box. Hecht held off her defender and turned to her left before firing a left footed blast to the near post. Hecht added an insurance goal that ended up being the game-winner. Andrea Valdes (SR) chested a ball down to her feet before slotting the ball into Hecht on the right side, Hecht turned to the right before slipping a ball low and to the near post past the Dutch keeper.
Holland would not go away, making it 5-4 with a little over 7 minutes remaining. Taylor Twork came up big in the final 2 minutes of the game, thwarting a point blank shot by smothering the ball just before the Dutch player could get her shot off.
"Really exciting game against a good team. Very proud of the effort and resilience of our kids tonight. We always have great matches against the Dutch! Glad we came out on top tonight."
